About Manual Osteopathy

What is Manual Osteopathy?

Manual Osteopathy is a form of hands-on therapy that can have beneficial effects for a variety of muscle and joint conditions. A manual osteopath will spend time talking with you to understand more about you and your symptoms, along with your medical history and lifestyle. I will carry out a thorough examination which will involve touching the area of the body that hurts, and some general movement and specific testing if required. This will help me to provide as accurate an assessment as possible for the cause of your pain.

I may ask about other influences which may affect you, such as your daily activities, hobbies, your diet and sleeping patterns. Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, so I may examine your whole body.

Manual Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, stretching muscles and mobilising joints. This is often used together with exercise and helpful advice designed to help you manage your pain, keep active and maintain the best of health. Your treatment will be tailored to you as an individual, and this helps to ensure you are comfortable with the treatment plan. In some instances, you may be referred to your GP for further investigation.

Manual Osteopathy Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will you treat me on my first appointment?

A. In most cases your initial consultation will last up to 75 minutes and include some treatment unless I feel further investigation is needed.

Q. What forms do I need to bring to first appointment?

A.  If you are a new patient you can download the necessary NEW CLIENT INTAKE FORM complete and bring to your session.

Q. Will the treatment be painful?

A. Osteopathic treatment is designed to be a gentle whole body approach to manual therapy, however some patients may find some treatment techniques uncomfortable and I will talk to you about this as I treat. We are all different! and treatment varies between patients. You may experience mild discomfort afterwards, but in most cases this will resolve within 24-48 hours.

Q. Don’t you just treat backs?

A. Osteopaths are commonly known for treating back pain and postural problems including changes due to pregnancy, caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and minor sports injuries. Patients have also found osteopathy helpful for conditions such as headaches, digestive issues, circulatory problems, neuralgia and problems sleeping.

Q. Do I have to be undressed?

A. No need to undress fully. Tight clothing such as jeans can restrict your movement during the session. I ask that you please wear or bring comfortable clothing ie. tshirt, shorts or yoga pants for your session. I will carry out a postural assessment which involves looking at how you move and stand. A t-shirt is provided if needed.

Q. How is Osteopathy different from Chiropractic, Physiotherapy or Massage Therapy?

A. Osteopathy is unique in its philosophy and practice. It looks at the body as a global unit and how a mechanical imbalance, nearby the pain or symptom, may be the root cause of dysfunction. Osteopaths use gentle techniques which are integrative to the body, incorporating muscles, fascia, ligaments, and joints into the adjustment. As a result, the body is structurally balanced, which increases stability and a lasting treatment effect. The treatment aims to coordinate body parts to alleviate pressure on nerves and blood vessels to help support the healing process.

Q. Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

 A. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment, and children under 16 years of age do require a parent or guardian present for us to be able to see them.

Client Osteopathy Testimonials

Hip Pain Gone 1 Visit

"I am a RMT and I was having problems with my hip. Tried massage to no avail.  Was going on a South American cruise and really wanted to get the problems with my hip solved. I booked 2 appointments with Andy but as it turns out, I only needed one.  Andy did his Osteopathic magic and was able to resolve the pain issue with one visit.  Had a great cruise with lots of hiking and no pain.  Thanks Andy"

Full Range of Motion

"I was in a car accident and injured my knee.  The doctor cleared me for physio. Since I had met Andy at a conference a little while before, I thought that I would try the Osteopathic route instead of physiotherapy. After just 4 appointments and a therapy that he called Muscle Energy Techniques. I was able to regain full range of motion. Very happy!"

Spinal Surjery Not Needed

"I was referred to Andy because of lower back pain issues. I'm a large man and walking, sitting and everything in between was painful for me. Going to Andy was my last resort before considering surgery. Andy used a very gentle technique on me which I honestly did no think was going to work. But it did, little by little. After 6 appointments I went for a scheduled MRI which revealed that spinal surgery was no longer necessary.  Hooray!  Thanks Andy."
